Background |
Genus had written an on-line exercise journal which had been used successfully by a Telford & Wrekin Secondary School. We were looking for a Primary School to use it for a similar Challenge & enlisted the help of Gail Rance at Grange Park Primary School who was looking for a way to increase the amount of physical activity & exercise their pupils were undertaking. They launched a Challenge whereby their pupils would ‘Walk around the World in 7 months’. Each member of the school would contribute to the challenge of exercising the equivalent of the circumference of the Globe. There would be a variety of different activities & exercises contained within the journal in the site – some of which were created by Gail – and each one was given a ‘mileage’ rate to count towards the target. The harder the exercise, the more miles it is worth. The system needed to account for the fact that each class would compete as a separate country. Each Country would then compete against each other to contribute the most miles to the final total. We needed to take into account things such as security issues and reporting requirements to give parents/teachers complete peace of mind regarding the data being input by the pupils.

Solution |
| As part of developing an application to administer and maintain a school-wide Challenge based project we had to put in place a secure and robust method of Data Storage and maintenance. After reviewing the requirements and criteria, we designed a SQL server database as the back end to the project. This enabled us to put in place an efficient data store that interacted with the application to provide a secure and scalable solution using a SQL Server based Web Site |

Client Statement |
“We were asked to trial the fit for school website to see the benefits of using it in primary schools. As a new school following an amalgamation of two primary schools we thought this would be a good idea to find out how much sport the children have access to and to monitor provision we were going to be providing to the children. The Key Stage 2 children have been particularly enthusiastic about the site, they enjoy looking at the results of children in the corresponding class and finding out who is topping the leader board, it has helped to motivate children into signing up for more after school clubs and to think about the types of physical activity they can do out of school to increase their standing on the league table. We have used the website to support our work on healthy schools, to monitor and support children who need encouraging to lead a more active lifestyle and by looking at the results of each class have seen a rise in their physical activity from the beginning of the trial As PE coordinator I have found the website useful in terms of keeping an up to date diary of sporting competitions and results, in such a large school it is not always possible to give this information to the children immediately and they too have enjoyed looking at the fixtures, seeing how the teams are doing as well as asking if they can be part of the various teams. The team behind fit for school have been a tremendous help, responding to emails and questions quickly in order to run the challenge smoothly, they have taken on board suggestions to make the site more user friendly to young children, offer support in keeping the challenge going, send out regular newsletters which the children enjoy looking at, these are also displayed on our fit for school notice board and on our school website, this support has been invaluable in keeping the momentum going. As a school we would definitely look at setting up another challenge, in particular for the Key Stage 2 children to try and meet” Gail Rance – Grange Park Primary School
