Background

Pounds a Round is a leading second hand and scrap gold dealer in the West Midlands.
The customers approached us looking for an electronic programme that would replace the existing paper based system at their ‘Cash Converter’ style shop.
It needed to control and manage current working practices relating to stock, transactions and buyback agreements.
They wanted to streamline current business practices to ensure transactions can be conducted quickly and efficiently and also to ensure up to date reporting.
There needed to be several forms of input into the system - Webcam, Barcode reader/Keyboard and several formats of output from the system; Barcode labels, triplicate receipts, receipts etc.
Operators & managers needed different levels of access, and the ability to incorporate a variety of input forms was essential.

Solution

The requirement was for an application to store information about customers (customers have to be registered in order to deal with the outlet), store transactional information and deal with the selling of items within the outlet.
There was a further requirement to make sure that the application allows for the sharing of data across multiple sites at a later date.
Finally, the application utilises bar code scanner technology when dealing with the Point of Sale functionality. Stock track & stock take was included as was the export of figures directly to an excel spreadsheet.

Technologies

The application was developed in VB .NET for a target operating system of Microsoft Vista. The data is stored in Microsoft SQL Server.
The .Net Framework was used along with barcode scanning technologies
